Principal Robin Cohen was awarded “Best in Insurance” at the sixth annual Euromoney Legal Media Group Americas Women in Business Law Awards, which took place at the Essex House in New York City on June 8, 2017. Over the past year, Robin has served as lead counsel in a long list of high-profile insurance plaintiff wins amounting to more than $1 billion in insurance coverage for her corporate policyholder clients.
Robin scored two landmark decisions for Warren Pumps – one from the New York Court of Appeals concerning the allocation of long-tail claims (May 3, 2016) and another from the Delaware Supreme Court concerning the assignment of policy rights and the trigger of coverage (September 12, 2016) – which have allowed Warren to access more than $500 million in asbestos insurance coverage limits. The case topped Law360’s list of the “Biggest Insurance Rulings In 2016.”
In February, Robin served as lead counsel for Givaudan Fragrances Corporation in securing a unanimous decision from the New Jersey Supreme Court that entitled the company to seek more than $500 million in coverage for environmental damage claims. Here, the Court agreed with the Cohen Ziffer team in determining that an insurance policy clause preventing assignments to other entities didn’t bar coverage for a post-loss claim by an insured’s corporate successor. The decision has far-reaching implications in protecting a corporate insured’s right to reorganize its business without fear of risking the forfeiture of its historic insurance coverage.
The following month, Robin scored a major victory as lead counsel for Verizon from the Delaware Superior Court in a decision that allows Verizon to access coverage for tens of millions of dollars in legal fees and costs that the company incurred while successfully defending a $14 billion lawsuit. She was recognized as “Litigator of the Week” by AmLaw Litigation Daily as a result of her success in the case.
