New York—October 2, 2023—Cohen Ziffer chair Robin Cohen has been recognized by Law360 as an MVP for insurance. She is one of only five insurance lawyers from across the country to make this year’s list.
In her 30-plus-year career, Robin has recovered more than $10 billion for insurance policyholders, with corporations like Verizon, Pfizer, CBS, and Spirit Airlines repeatedly choosing her to obtain coverage for their most catastrophic losses.
Over time, her cases have reflected the most prominent risks to businesses, their employees, and society at large. Notably, Robin secured a landmark decision for client Warren Pumps LLC in a case that addressed policyholders’ right to coverage after they have lost the ability to use their property due to the presence of a dangerous substance on the premises. Her career highlights also include, for instance, a $1.85 billion trial award (upheld on appeal) covering the asbestos liabilities of a manufacturer, IMO Industries.
In recent years, Robin has achieved unprecedented success in winning favorable decisions on behalf of companies that sustained losses as a result of the pandemic. More than 100 such clients have called on Robin and her team to assist them. Just this week, Robin and her team secured a ruling on behalf of JRK Property Holdings, in which the California Court of Appeal found that JRK sufficiently alleged physical loss or damage to its properties as a result of the pandemic. This ruling is a critical first step in JRK’s recovery efforts.
Additional recent matters that reflect Robin’s ability to achieve rare and impactful victories include:
- For Clover Health Investments Corp., one of the first decisions addressing coverage for a special purpose acquisition company, or “SPAC.”
- For Conduent State Healthcare, in its pursuit of coverage for a $236 million Medicaid fraud settlement, the extremely rare reversal of a jury verdict.
- For PES Holdings, the owner of an oil refinery destroyed in an explosion, a favorable settlement three days into trial over the covered value of PES’s property damage claim and bad faith claim.
This is the seventh time Robin has received this honor from Law360. She has also been recognized as one of the New York Law Journal’s “Distinguished Leaders,” The National Law Journal’s “50 Most Influential Women Lawyers” in America and “Plaintiffs’ Attorneys Trailblazers,” and Crain’s New York Business’ “Notable Diverse Leaders in Law,” as well as a Legal 500 “Advice to Policyholders” Hall of Fame honoree, and one of Benchmark Litigation’s “Top 100 Trial Lawyers,” “Insurance Litigators of the Year,” “Top 250 Women in Litigation,” and “Litigation Stars,” among many other accolades.
